About Us

History

We are a general practice, full service law firm.  Our attorneys have experience and expertise in a broad range of legal matters.  We are committed to providing skilled high quality representation to all of our clients.  Our firm has been serving Northeastern South Dakota for almost 100 years.  Stan Siegel and Joe Barnett joined the firm in the 1950’s and began building the firm to what it is today.  These founding partners built a solid reputation as a preeminent trial lawyers while also providing general legal services of the highest quality in South Dakota.

Current Practice

Today, our lawyers handle a wide range of civil and criminal litigation and appeals at all levels of state and federal courts and administrative tribunals.  A major portion of our practice is devoted to representing our clients, both in and out of courtroom settings, not only have we defended individuals on behalf of insurance companies, but we have been involved in plaintiff’s personal injury, wrongful death, workers compensation and other such cases.  We have been successful in recovering some of the larger verdicts and settlements in this region.

We also provide premier agricultural legal representation, involving litigation, forming farming corporations, and/or working administratively through numerous agricultural issues facing today’s business farmer.  In addition, we represent national and local businesses, health providers, nonprofit corporations, public entities and small businesses.

Services

Although we are prepared to be vigorous advocates in the courtroom, we also take pride in using alternative dispute resolutions and other means to resolve cases short of the courtroom, if that is in the best interest of our clients.  We also offer services to individuals and businesses in the area of business and estate planning, probate, real estate purchases and sales, contracts, and employment issues, among other areas.

While our lawyers are licensed in South Dakota, they are also licensed in numerous other states, including North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana and Alaska.  We also frequently associate with lawyers in other states when needed to handle matters on behalf of our clients.

Giving Back

Our lawyers and staff have a long history of service to our profession, community and state.  Our members have been actively involved in local, state, and national organizations, including leadership of the State Bar.  Our members also serve as leaders, board members, and volunteers in numerous civic service, governmental and church organizations and activities.
